WHY THESE SUBJECTS BELONG TOGETHER

Every subject on this webpage is one question wearing different clothes: what is the human capacity to reason and to imagine, and what do the instruments we build owe it? Echosphere works on that question from an old direction. The founder's working position — offered as an argument, never as an article of faith — is that ancient Greek philosophy remains arguably the best single source on the human condition: on consciousness, on our capacity to reason and imagine, and therefore on what any machine built to assist those capacities must answer to. Read at the source, in its own language, that philosophy is intensely practical about one thing above all — that getting the words right is part of getting the thing right. Hence the persistent attention in these papers to what a claim means and what it is entitled to assert: the interest in semantics is not a style. It is inherited. Artificial intelligence, the schools, civic institutions, the ownership of one's own information — each is a place where that inheritance is presently being spent, well or badly.

Behind these papers sit a multi-year re-translation of Aristotle — the Metaphysics, On the Soul, and the shorter works on mind and memory — carried out book by book against the Greek of the standard editions; a long study of Herodotus and the beginnings of disciplined evidence-handling in the first historians; forty years of forensic analysis, a trade in which a claim is never worth more than its warrant; patent filings in the governance of machine assertion; and a governed corpus of essays and frameworks in preparation, to be published here as each is ready. The reader is invited to weigh the papers against that desk.
